FedEx unveils fully autonomous delivery robot

FedEx introduces its SameDay Bot autonomous home delivery robot, which has the distinction of being more agile than its competitors.

Fedex introduced its new FedEx SameDay Bot robot, which in the same way as Amazon's standalone delivery robot, aims to deliver packages to your home faster.

The SameDay Bot is a 4-wheel autonomous robot with articulated arms that can easily climb sidewalks and drive up to 16 km/h. It is equipped with a LIDAR sensor (as on autonomous cars) and cameras, allowing it to move with cars and pedestrians in mind. It is also equipped with two screens to communicate with pedestrians and interact with customers.

First, SameDay Bot will be tested by transporting parcels between the various offices of the company's headquarters in Memphis. Then, if all goes well, a second phase of testing will put the robot into service in other companies. Among those interested, have already known the names of some companies like AutoZone, Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens and Walmart with which FedEx is in discussion.

Like other autonomous delivery robots of this kind, it should, undergo a testing phase in residential neighborhoods before perhaps, eventually, be offered as a commercial delivery solution.
